ETHOS

noun

A guiding belief or set of ideals that inspires or characterizes a community, culture, or organization, driving its actions, goals, and practices. It reflects the character, moral nature, and guiding values that inform an entity, shaping its approach to engaging with both its community and the world.

Our Ethos draws inspiration from a diverse array of philosophies and strategies (modern, ancient, Western and Eastern) to guide its approach to social change and community empowerment. This is how we do what we do.

  • Challenging the status quo is in our DNA. We embrace innovative thinking and bold actions to disrupt harmful systems and practices, creating pathways for more just and equitable alternatives.

  • Even in the face of division and misinformation, our belief in a united and informed Canada never wavers. We're driven by an unwavering optimism, championing a future where every individual is empowered, and collective action leads to positive change

  • We understand the strength of community and the magic of collective effort. We believe in pooling resources, knowledge, and passion, knowing that when we work together, we can achieve bigger, more lasting change.

  • Iterative (un)Learners signifies our dedication to unending learning and collective evolution, inspired by Maya Angelou's insight, "Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better."

This underscores that both our shared and personal paths are marked by continual development—what we grasp now lays the groundwork for future progress. It's a commitment to adapting and enhancing our actions and understanding as we move forward, always with the aim of achieving our shared dream of liberation.

  • Recognizing the urgency and necessity of our work, we are committed to addressing critical issues that are essential for the well-being and advancement of society. Our actions are not just beneficial; they are vital. We know that humanity is worthy of collective liberation by any means necessary.

  • We honour the past and future generations in our actions and decisions. Our work today is a legacy for tomorrow, ensuring that we leave a world enriched, not depleted, for those who come after us.

In thinking like a future ancestor, we remember that we may not witness collective liberation in our lifetimes, but that it is still essential to do our part for it.

  • We recognize that social issues are complex and multifaceted, often interwoven with various aspects of identity, such as race, gender, class, ability, and more. By adopting an intersectional approach, we commit to understanding and addressing these complexities in a holistic manner. We strive to create solutions and spaces that acknowledge and honor the full spectrum of human experience and identity. This value guides us to not only appreciate the diversity within our communities but also to actively work against all forms of discrimination and injustice. In doing so, we ensure that our efforts are inclusive, nuanced, and effectively targeted at dismantling systemic barriers.
